What's the difference between travel assistance and travel insurance?

Travel insurance reimburses you afterwards; travel assistance solves it in the moment.

Travel insurance works by reimbursement: you pay, gather receipts, file a claim, wait. Travel assistance (like PAX) acts in real time: it coordinates with clinics, hospitals and local services so the traveler doesn't have to advance money or solve things alone.

Do I need to pay upfront with PAX?

No. PAX pays clinics, hospitals and medical providers directly at destination. It's the cashless model: the traveler doesn't advance money, doesn't gather receipts, doesn't wait for reimbursements.

Unlike traditional travel insurance — which works by reimbursement and forces the traveler to pay first and claim later — PAX takes care of paying the provider in the moment. In which cases can PAX operate by reimbursement?

In the vast majority of cases, PAX pays the medical provider directly (cashless model) and the traveler doesn't pay upfront. But there are exceptional situations where reimbursement is the only possible option.

The most typical example: an accident or serious emergency that prevents the traveler from contacting PAX before receiving care. In those cases, local emergency services (ambulance, on-call hospital) usually transport the traveler to the nearest medical center, which may not be part of the PAX provider network.

What to do if this happens?

  1. First things first: your health.
  2. As soon as possible, contact PAX via WhatsApp (you, a family member or a companion can do it).
  3. Keep all original documentation: invoices, medical history, prescriptions, payment receipts and medical reports.

PAX evaluates the case and applies the corresponding reimbursement according to the plan, the PAX ID conditions, the coverage limits and the documentation provided. Reimbursement is processed at paxassistance.com/request-refund.

Important: reimbursement coverage is subject to the specific conditions, limits and exclusions of the plan, as well as the notice deadlines set in the PAX ID. Keeping all original documentation is essential to process the reimbursement.

Medical assistance and medications

What does PAX cover for travelers with reduced mobility and service animals?

PAX is the only travel assistance on the market with comprehensive coverage for people with reduced mobility and their service animals. Because traveling is for everyone, and truly accompanying means thinking about every reality. 💜

Available benefits:

  • Service animal: repatriation or transport when the traveler must return for medical reasons, temporary lodging if hospitalized, emergency veterinary care and nutritional guidance.

What is PAX CASH?

PAX CASH is PAX's digital wallet that deposits funds instantly for necessary expenses during the trip. The end of reimbursements: you don't pay, you don't wait weeks, you don't gather forms.

PAX CASH is included in every plan (according to plan and PAX ID).

When is PAX CASH activated?

PAX CASH is activated in two specific scenarios, after you contact the Center:

  • Medications: after a medical visit (telemedicine or in-person), to buy the prescribed medication
  • Delayed baggage: to buy first-need items while the suitcase is missing

The Center evaluates the case and, when applicable, deposits funds instantly in your digital wallet.

How do I receive the PAX CASH money?

Funds arrive in your digital wallet and you can pay via NFC from your phone (compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay). No paperwork, no queues, no runaround.

What is considered "first-need items"?

Basic purchases so you can keep traveling while your baggage doesn't appear:

  • Personal hygiene: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap
  • Essential clothing: underwear, socks, t-shirt, jacket if the climate requires it
  • If you travel with a baby: diapers, wipes, hygiene basics
  • Other immediate basics depending on the trip context

What do I do in a life-threatening emergency?

Baggage

What do I do if my baggage didn't arrive?

Before leaving the airport: file the claim with the airline and request the PIR (Property Irregularity Report). Then write to us via WhatsApp with the PIR number + PAX ID.

Keep everything: PIR, boarding pass and receipts of basic purchases if you make any.

What does PAX cover if my baggage is delayed?

If your plan includes this benefit, PAX covers the purchase of first-need items so you can continue your trip. In case of delay, PAX CASH is also activated to resolve it instantly (according to plan and PAX ID).

Does the delay compensation apply when I return to my country?

No. The delay compensation applies only while you're traveling, because that's where you don't have access to your basics. Back home, those basics are already available.

What happens if my baggage arrives damaged?

To access compensation, the damage must be serious: when the suitcase becomes unusable for future trips (according to plan and PAX ID).

Can I buy PAX if I'm already traveling?

Yes, you can. But there's a 72-hour waiting period before you can use the services. It's a simple safeguard to prevent buying PAX when the problem has already started.

How much does PAX cost?

Does PAX cover the United States?

Yes. PAX covers the United States. For trips to the USA we recommend a plan with minimum coverage of USD 100,000, given the high complexity and cost of healthcare at that destination.

Does PAX cover Europe and the Schengen Area?

Yes. PAX meets the requirements of the Schengen Area (minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for medical expenses and repatriation). For Schengen visa, we send you the coverage letter without additional procedures.

Does PAX cover COVID?

Yes. PAX covers medical assistance for COVID during the trip, according to plan and PAX ID. If you need quarantine at destination or medical care, the Center supports you like in any other health situation.

How do I receive my PAX ID?

How do I change dates, validity or document on the PAX ID?

Two simple options:

When does coverage start and end?

Coverage starts on the date indicated in your PAX ID and ends at 23:59 on the end-of-coverage date.

Can I cancel PAX?

Before the start of coverage: yes, free of charge, by writing to pax.operations@paxassistance.com. Once coverage has started: it cannot be canceled.

How to choose the right plan

How do I choose the best plan for my trip?

Three factors: destination, duration and traveler profile.

  • Expensive-healthcare destinations (USA, Punta Cana, Mexico, Europe): minimum USD 100,000
  • Short trips to affordable destinations: a lower plan may suffice
  • If you travel more than once a year: Multitrip is worth it

Are there special prices for families?

Yes. All Annual Multitrip plans include a benefit: for every adult who buys, a minor under 21 gets the same coverage at no charge (in the same purchase).

Plan types

What is a Multitrip plan?

Multitrip lets you travel unlimited times during a year, as long as each trip doesn't exceed 30, 60 or 90 days (depending on the plan). You buy it once and you're covered for a full year, with no need to activate it before each trip.

When is Multitrip worth buying?

If you plan to travel at least twice in a year, Multitrip is worth it. Also if a single trip lasts more than 18 days, because it tends to be more convenient and remains valid for future trips.

What are long-stay plans?

Long-stay plans cover trips longer than 3 months outside the country of residence. PAX can be valid for up to 12 consecutive months outside the country.

Do Multitrip and regular plans cover my country of residence?

No. PAX is designed for trips — assistance does not apply within the country of residence. This applies to every plan, including Multitrip.

Pre-existing conditions and exclusions

What is a pre-existing condition?

A pre-existing condition is a condition or illness that already existed before starting the trip, even if silent or symptomless, and that can be verified through usual medical exams.

Does PAX cover pre-existing conditions?

Yes. Every PAX plan includes assistance for pre-existing conditions, within the limit indicated in your PAX ID. If you need a higher limit, there's the Pre-existing Conditions Upgrade to expand it.

Why do pre-existing conditions have a sublimit?

Because PAX is travel assistance, not health insurance. You don't pay every month nor submit a prior medical declaration: it's contracted only for the trip period. The sublimit is enough to handle the urgency, stabilize the person and, if needed, support the return home.

What if I need something that isn't included in the plan?

That's what PAX On Demand is for: even if the service isn't included, we support you with the coordination and full case management. You cover the cost, at preferential prices, and with real support so the trip continues.

What about sports?

Amateur and low-risk sports are included in the PAX base plan (unlike most assistance services on the market, which exclude them by default). For extreme sports, high-risk, competition or professional, there's the Sports / Extreme Sports Upgrade.

What about pregnancy?

By default, check-ups, delivery and many pregnancy situations require special conditions. If you need specific coverage, there's the Expecting Mother Upgrade. PAX is focused on travel emergencies, so pregnancy (which requires scheduled follow-up) is treated as an upgrade.

What doesn't PAX cover?

PAX doesn't cover:

  • Events derived from alcohol, drugs or self-medication (not unforeseen, but avoidable risk)
  • Intentional acts, fraud or false information
  • Preventive check-ups, routine exams or schedulable treatments
  • Alternative treatments (homeopathy) and aesthetic treatments
  • Prostheses, hearing aids, wheelchairs and personal-use items
  • Extraordinary catastrophes (war, terrorism, nuclear radiation)
  • Long clinical mental health treatment (yes covers 24/7 emotional support in trip crises)

PAX is designed for the unexpected during the trip, not to replace a healthcare system. And many exclusions are solved with the corresponding upgrade.
